Nokia's new mobiles take aim at Facebooking music lovers

Nokia, the world's largest maker of mobile phones, on Wednesday announced new phones loaded with more music features and better integration with Facebook, as well as pricing for its upcoming netbook.
The company announced the new phones and services at its Nokia World Conference in Stuttgart, Germany.
Top on the list of new phones is the N97 Mini, a slightly smaller version of Nokia's existing flagship N97 smartphone. This new, smaller N97 has a shorter battery life than the earlier device and also less memory (8GB compared to 32GB), and a smaller touchscreen display. The device is expected to ship in October. Its list price is 450, about $640, not much less than the full-fledged N97, which initially went on sale in the US for $700.

The new N97 Mini will also have Nokia's Comes With Music service integrated. This service increases the cost of the device, but provides users with a free download music service. And the device will be the first Nokia phone to have tighter integration with the social networking site Facebook. Nokia has struck a deal with Facebook to let users update their location and status directly to the website through a Nokia Ovi account.
Nokia plans to offer the Facebook integration on other phones as well.
The handset maker also announced two new music phones: the X6 and the X3. The X6, which has a touchscreen and 32GB of built-in memory, will be Nokia's new flagship music phone. The company expects to ship the new phone in the fourth quarter for a list price of 450. As with the N97, users will also get the Comes With Music service bundled into the phone.
Nokia has close to 40 per cent worldwide mobile phone market share. Recently it has been trying to diversify its business by offering its phone users online services, such as music downloads, games, and maps. The company created its Ovi service platform as a repository for all of these functions and hopes that one day all Nokia phone customers will use their Ovi accounts to access and manage their music, video, and photos.
But even though Nokia estimates that the global online market will reach 100bn by 2010, the company must continue to feed its core device business with new phones. There's no question that Nokia is still the leader in the overall mobile phone market. It has done especially well providing low-cost devices to the developing world, but it has been challenged to keep up with innovations in the smartphone category.
Nokia is losing market share to players such as Apple with the iPhone and RIM with its BlackBerry. Nokia is particularly challenged in the US, where it is virtually non-existent and lacks key carrier relationships for its hottest devices.
Unfortunately, the new phones announced at the Nokia World are unlikely to slow its slide in the high end of the market. While the devices mark improvements for Nokia's overall product line, they are not revolutionary with respect to other products that they will compete with on the worldwide market.
Still, Nokia is not giving up. The phone maker announced last month a relationship with Microsoft to develop a version of Microsoft's Office software for Nokia handsets. And last week, it also announced its N900 smartphone, its first Linux-based phone, which is expected to compete more directly with the iPhone and a flood of Google Android phones due to hit the market later this year and early next year.
Nokia also plans to offer more sophisticated hardware, in the form of a mini-laptop or netbook - last week it announced the new device, dubbed the Nokia Booklet 3G. At the event in Germany on Wednesday it announced that it will ship the mini laptop in the fourth quarter with a list price tag of 575.
What makes Nokia's netbook different from others in the category is that the device will have GPS embedded to provide access to Nokia's Ovi Maps software and service.

TouchLockPro is a general purpose locking program for the newer HTC phones. TouchLockPro is designed not to interfere with running applications and is a multipurpose locking application. Other locking solutions are often specific for locking only incoming calls/SMS. A lot of locking solutions also place a (transparant looking) Window on top of the running application (e.g. slide 2 unlock), so the information of the background application is no longer visible. This is not the case for TouchLockPro, so it can be kept lean and mean. Also the used resources is very very low.

There are already a lot of applications to disable touchpanel and/or hardware keys for the Touch Diamond and Pro.

Desc: Features:
* lock using the Power button, BattClock and/or Stylus Sensor
* auto-unlock by the Light Sensor
* unlock using triple touch of the Capacitive Sensor
* unlock and lock using Capacitive Sensor swipes, 8 (external) commands can be configured for the different swipe possibilities.

How to install?

* Go via the explorer of the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro to the location where you copied the .CAB file and click on it to start installation
* Advice is to install it to the Phone memory and not to the Memory card, TouchLockPro is very small and so it also works in "DiskDrive" mode

How to lock?

Prerequisite: Stylus is IN, not on AC/USB power
* Press the power button (AutoLockOnPowerOn)
* Pressing the BattClock
* Take OUT the Stylus and putting it back IN within 1 second

How to unlock?

* Wait till the Light Sensor unlocks automatically (default 5 seconds) in not too dark lighting conditions
* Triple touch the capacitive hardware area at the same area within 3 seconds (the number of valid touches at the same area are shown instead of the battery life percentage)
* Take OUT the Stylus
* Attach to AC/USB power

TouchLockPro is designed for the newer Touch generation HTC phones, using their unique sensors:

* Light Sensor
* Capacitive NavSensor
* Stylus sensor

The Light Sensor will auto-unlock in not too dark conditions, when it senses light for more than 5 seconds. When it is too dark, use the triple capacitive touch approach, see below.

The capacitive sensor has 3 main area's, indicated in the above figure, 1, 2, and 3. Some features:
* Will not react on non-capacitive touches like Stylus. Nice when in your pocket too.
* You only need to gently touch the area's, without pressing the hardware buttons underneath
* TouchLockPro uses this feature for unlocking. Gently touch three times at the same area (without touching another area) within 3 seconds, to unlock the phone
* With an incoming call, the best is to triple touch the answer area 1, to avoid missed calls when you accidently touch too hard and press the reject hardware button

* screenshot 1: if the phone is locked, the fore and background are reversed, showing the time and battery life percentage
* screenshot 2: One capacitive touch is done and shown, when occurred, instead of the battery life percentage. If the 3 seconds have been elapsed, it is switched back to battery life percentage

* screenshot 4: Third capacitive touch is done at the same place in time and the phone is unlocked. The normal background and forground of the battClock is shown.

The locking behaviour can also be controlled with the Stylus sensor:
* When the Stylus is out, the phone is always unlocked.
* When the stylus is taken OUT and IN within 1 seconds, the "lock mode" is toggled.
* When the Stylus is taken out, the phone awakens from sleep (you do not need to press the Power button)

First row:
* Lock (and keep the display on)
* Lock and suspend immediately (Power off)
* Exit the Action screen

Second row:
* Configuration options (so you do not need to use a registry editor anymore, and easily switch between settings)

The S60 Platform (formerly Series 60 User Interface) is a software platform for mobile phones that runs on Symbian OS. S60 is currently amongst the leading smartphone platforms in the world. It is owned by Nokia (who purchased outstanding shareholders in Symbian in June 2008 and is currently in the process of open-sourcing both the S60 user-interface which Nokia developed and licensed and the newly acquired underlying Symbian OS). The S60 software is a multivendor standard for smartphones that supports application development in Java MIDP, C++, Python[1] and Adobe Flash. An important feature of S60 phones is that they allow new applications to be installed after purchase. Unlike a standard desktop platform, however, the built-in apps are rarely upgraded by the vendor beyond bug fixes. New features are only added to phones while they are being developed rather than after public release.

These are a few common features in S60:

In S60 1st Edition, the devices' display resolution was fixed to 176x208. Since 2nd Edition Feature Pack 3, S60 supports multiple resolutions, i.e. Basic (176x208), and Double (352x416). Nokia N90 was the first S60 device to support a higher resolution (352x416). Some devices, however, have non-standard resolutions, like the Siemens SX1, with 176x220. Nokia 5500 Sport has a 208x208 screen resolution, and the Nokia E90 with its wide 800x352 inner display.

It is noteworthy that software written for S60 1st Edition (S60v1) or 2nd Edition (S60v2) is not binary-compatible with S60 3rd Edition (S60v3) because the latter uses a new, hardened version of Symbian OS (v9.1), which has mandatory code signing. In S60v3, a user may install only programs that have a certificate from a registered developer, unless the user disables that feature.

In 2006, a "Designed for S60 Devices" logo program for developers was launched. The logotype can be used with conforming programs (Symbian or Java).

In 2007, an accreditation scheme that tests the ability of developers to use S60 effectively was launched. The scheme is run by Majinate, who also run the Accredited Symbian Developer scheme. The accreditation requires developers to pass two on-line exams: one in Symbian OS, the other in S60. This leads to recognition as an "Accredited S60 Developer".

In October 2008, S60 5th Edition was launched. (Nokia decided to move from 3rd Edition directly to 5th Edition "as a polite gesture to Asian customers"[2], because the number four means bad luck in some Asian cultures). S60 5th Edition runs on Symbian OS version 9.4[3]. The major feature of 5th Edition is support for high-resolution 640x360 touchscreens; before 5th Edition, all S60 devices had a button-based user interface. S60 5th Edition also integrates standard C/C++ APIs and includes Adobe Flash Lite 3.0 with S60-specific ActionScript extensions that give Flash Lite developers access to phone features like contacts, text messaging, sensors and device location information (GPS). It includes Adobe Flash Lite 3 support. [4]
